Artist Spotlight: Vincent Van Gogh

Dutch "Post-Impressionist" Painter, 1853-1890

Categorized as a "Post-Impressionist" painter Vincent Van Gogh's paintings are some of the most recognized paintings in the world today. Van Gogh was part of an art movement in France as a reaction against formalism of the dominant academic style. Many people are somewhat familiar with the story about Van Gogh cutting his ear off and the obvious inner struggles in Van Gogh's life.

After Van Gogh's self mutilation of his ear he spent about one year at the mental institute at Saint-Remy. During this year Van Gogh painted close to 140 paintings, some of his most creative.

It was during this stay at Saint-Remy that Van Gogh painted "Starry Night". This painting truly show-cases Van Gogh's unique brush strokes, and leaves us wondering what his interpretation of the painting may have been.

Despite Van Gogh's incredible talent his inner struggles got the best of him when he took his life in 1890 by shooting himself in the chest with a revolver.
